Abstract

Leafhoppers and planthoppers (Insecta: Auchenorrhyncha) as indicators for biodiversity assessments and nature conservation evaluation: This contribution is a review demonstrating approaches for the use of leafhoppers and planthoppers (Auchenorrhyncha) as indicators for biodiversity and environmental impact assessments, habitat monitoring and evaluation. We argue that hoppers are a sensitive and convenient indicator group for the assessment of habitat changes, especially in grassland ecosystems, because of their high population densities and species diversity in almost all terrestrial habitat types, high habitat and food plant specificity, small-scale responses to habitat and vegetation changes, and due to the availability of excellent identification tools. Based on a literature survey focussing on Central Europe, the available information on the ecology of Auchenorrhyncha species, communities and relevant coenotic parameters (e. g. species richness, life strategies, biological traits, threat status) is presented. Finally, some examples are given to demonstrate the use of Auchenorrhyncha as indicators for biodiversity aspects and in efficiency control of conservation measures.
